3d Computation of Unsteady Flow past a Sphere with a Parallel Finite Element Method
نویسنده
چکیده
We present parallel computation of 3D, unsteady, incompressible ow past a sphere. The Navier-Stokes equations of incompressible ows are solved using a stabilized-nite element formulation. Equal-order interpolation functions are used for velocity and pressure. The second-order accurate time-marching within the solution process is carried out in an implicit fashion. The coupled, nonlinear equations generated at each time step are solved using an element-vector-based iteration technique. The computed value of the primary frequency associated with vortex shedding is in close agreement with experimental measurements. The computation was performed on the Thinking Machines CM-5.

متن کاملPARALLEL FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTATION OF 3D INCOMPRESSIBLE FLOWS ON MPPs
In this chapter we present numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations with the stabilized finite element methods on the massively parallel CM-5 supercomputer. These computations are based on implicit methods and their implementations are based on the assumption that the mesh is unstructured. The use of matrix-free iterations eliminates the need to store element-level matrices, thus pr...
متن کاملParallel finite element computation of free - surface flows
In this paper we present parallel 2D and 3D finite element computation of unsteady, incompressible free-surface flows. The computations are based on the DeformableSpatial-Domain/Stabilized Space-Time (DSD/SST) finite element formulation, which takes automatically into account the motion of the free surface. The free-surface height is governed by a kinematic free-surface condition, which is also...
متن کاملUnsteady Free Convection from a Sphere in a Porous Medium with Variable Surface Temperature
In this paper a transient free convection flow around a sphere with variable surface temperature and embedded in a porous medium has been considered. The temperature of the sphere is suddenly raised and subsequently maintained at values that varies with position on surface. The method of asymptotic expansions is applied for small Rayleigh numbers and then a finite-difference scheme is used to s...
متن کاملStabilized Space-Time Finite Element Formulations for Free-Surface Flows
Aspects of a method for 3D finite element computation of unsteady, incompressible freesurface flow are presented. The approach is based on the Deformable-Spatial-Domain/ Stabilized Space-Time (DSD/SST) finite element formulation, which takes automatically into account the deformation of the elements in response to the motion of the free surface. The free-surface elevation is governed by a kinem...
